I loved the reaction of a friend to one of my stair rugs. He said, "It looks like it's trying to be symmetrical, but it doesn't really care that it isn't." That comment's been in my mind lately as I've been exploring dip pen drawing. As a mostly-recovered perfectionist, I love the feeling of freedom to get into a flow. With this drawing I started with the intention to make something based on an Art Deco design. In the past, I'd have quickly given up on the project, as I didn't have the patience to execute the geometry with precision. I ended up with something that probably doesn't even hint at Art Deco, but my experience of enjoying the movements of the pen was so much more rewarding than stressing out about my lack of perfection.
